STUDY HOW JAKUCHU DEPICTS BIRDS

 #Itojakuchu #birds #rooster #painting

I have posted this one before and I'm reposting it as an example of bird painting for the benefit if they will pay attention of the sort of anime / manga artist who apparently thinks wings and feathers are made of cardboard and anime means they don't have to study anatomy or other artists.

Also it is nearly Spring and there are flowers in this painting!

I certainly don't want to you all to be as fascinated or possibly obsessed with birds as Jakuchu was but whatever your art style he is a master you should study whether you are doing anime/ manga or  scientific illustration or whatever. Linework color layout composition this is a masterpiece. Study it!

Koson Print

#oharakoson #koson #rooster #yearoftherooster #japaneseprint

The Year of the Rooster doesnt end until February so I have a few more pieces to share

Note the beautiful background gradient and the excellent use of the white paper plus some subtle tints to depict the roosters feathers. The pale tints on the chicks counterbalance with the red of the crest .

Its still the year of the rooster!

#okimono #japanesesculpture #bronze #rooster #hen

It's still the Year of the Rooster so lets get back to that for a few posts though I will be doing other bird / flight / winged beings theme posts before the year of the dog starts.

Here's a lovely Japanese Bronze Okimono for you to enjoy!

One side effect of the fall of the Tokugawa regime was that craftsfolk working in metal who once produced objects catering to samurai and daimyo like sword scabbards, armour and helmets needed new markets and shifted to creating what the Japanese call okimono and we call Objects of Art or Small Sculptures such as this lovely pair.

Enjoy!!!

Hokusai Chicken print

#ukiyo-e #japaneseprint #hokusai

Un or semi colored rough proofs for japanese woodblock prints rarely survive but somehow this one did and it shows the technical skills of the carver who did the block and the genius of Hokusai.

Note how the varying line widths create tone and depth and texture and the gradients in the reds too!

I find this by accident looking for something else and will now try to find a full color version for comparision!

Another Cockerel for the Year of the Rooster

#yearoftherooster #yearofthe firerooster #shenzhou #chinesepainting #ming.

Here's an image of a rooster by Shen Zhou a Ming Dynasty Chinese Painter also famous for landscapes and calligraphy.

Its a slightly scrawny scruffy bird fluffing its feathers and clearly looking back at the artist.
Perhaps a favored pet wandered into the part of Shen Zhou's residence where he had his studio pavilion? Its not a pretty bird but definitely one with personality and attitude.

The brush styles used for the feathers complement and contrast with the different types used for the branches and then there's the restrained and careful use of brown coloring to admire too!

Utamaro Rooster Print

#utamaro #rooster #print

While Utamaro was better known for other themes he did a special commission for a Kyoka poetry club of an album of bird and flower images. Note that he brings the same level of detail to depicting feathers as he does to clothing. It is more "painterly" in composition and layout but note the crossed diagonals used to create depth without shadows!

Rooster Rendered in Lacquer

#yearoftherooster #lunarnewyear #asiannewyear #japaneselacquer

From the VA museum
If you read my previous post can you see why I think Japanese lacquer may have influenced Ito Jakuchu's style ?

Here's another Japanese lacquer

The raised areas may be ceramic or metal on both pieces rather than carved lacquer.
