MORONOBU PRINT

This print by MORONOBU illustrates a Kyoto about the slaying of a demon and its head being put on display. I have however chosen it because it clearly shows the bull and its yoke and the structure of oxcarts. Cattle in Japan were primarily draught animals not diary or meat animals.

One notes the poor bull is not happy with its cart's unusual load and is being coaxed or forced along!

A note on Buffalos and other bovines

A note on buffalos and other bovines

Yan Ciping

I have noticed over many years a tendency of any bovines in a Chinese painting to simply be labelled oxen or cattle regardless of what kind of bovines they are. For examples this painting's description does not mention this is a WATER BUFFALO COW with her CALF.

In a couple of weeks its the year of the Cow / Ox / bovine in the East Asian and I'll be sharing images of bovines in East Asian art with you. AND I will try to remember to focus on actual oxen.

Yes Water buffalo are bovines of the GENUS BOS but they are a completely different species!

The Year of the Ox starts soon so ...

This is a print by a lesser known Ukiyoe artist called Shunko.

I'm not entirely sure if the oxen are cows or water buffalo but note that one of them has a saddle!

Cattle were used for carrying loads as well as plowing fields or pulling carriages ! These two along with their humans  are enjoying a rest before being loaded with that bundle of firewood or perhaps she's delivering that bundle and about to move it into that nearby shed?
